Our nonprofit entity in India supports a wide range of interdisciplinary research, programming, and scholarly and cultural exchange for Harvard affiliates.

##  Enabling Harvard's Research and Academic Programming for the Public Good in India 

Our local non-profit entity, Harvard Global Research Support Centre India (HGI), is registered as a Section 8 Company, which enables us to support a broad range of activities and services across India on behalf of several Harvard Schools and centers.

**Permitted activities include**:

- Facilitating research and programming on art, commerce, culture, education, management, public health, public policy, science, the social sciences, technology, and other subjects of interest
- Hosting programs and training for the public benefit of India and for faculties, students, scholars, and alumni from Harvard and Indian institutions
- Disseminating research related to, and benefiting the public of, India undertaken by the entity and visiting Harvard faculty
- Advancing culture and customs through the exposure and exchange of students and scholars from Harvard University and Indian institutions
- Accepting grants and gifts and offering tax deductions to local Indian donors

Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s India Research Center in Mumbai enables the School to strengthen its longstanding ties in India and accelerate its collaborations with Indian partners to address critical public health challenges.

### Advancing Public Health Research, Practice, and Policy

Harvard Chan School has been actively engaged in research, collaboration, and capacity building among public health leaders in India since the 1960s. The country’s rapid development has created numerous challenges and opportunities, and so in 2013, the School created a formal initiative—the India Research Center—to further advance their joint research, teaching, and policy work. The India Research Center in Mumbai provides Harvard Chan School with an important operational base to conduct these activities throughout India.

The center was made possible by a gift from Dr. Swati Piramal, MPH ’92, and Ajay Piramal, MBA '92. Dr. Kasisomayajula "Vish" Viswanath, the Lee Kum Kee Professor of Public Health Communications, serves as the center’s founding director. With staff in Mumbai to support Harvard Chan School's physical presence, he guides the following activities:

- Public health research
- Translation and communication of knowledge to promote evidence-based policies and programs
- Training the next generation of public health scholars and practitioners for leadership roles in advocacy and public service through field visits and placements, workshops, fellowships, internships, and other academic programming

This center in Mumbai and its projects operate under our nonprofit local entity, Harvard Global Research Support Centre India.

## Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute Regional Office

The Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute’s (Mittal Institute) office in New Delhi provides a flagship site for University-wide scholarship and exchange in India.

### Establishing a Central Site for Harvard University in South Asia

For more than a decade, the Mittal Institute at Harvard University has supported interdisciplinary research, engagement, and programming for faculty, students, and visiting scholars at Harvard and in the South Asia region. Establishing an office in New Delhi—India's academic, political, and cultural hub—enables the Mittal Institute to advance its mission, meet a growing demand for academic activities in the region, and provide a base for future initiatives in India.

The Mittal Institute India office has been made possible by an in-kind donation of the space. The Mittal Institute's faculty director and executive director work closely with the office's director and the team in New Delhi to guide the office's activities, which include:

- Student programming, internships, and experiential learning opportunities
- Interdisciplinary research on culture, art, commerce, public policy, public health, the sciences, and technology
- Faculty collaborations across the University and institutes in India
- Fellowship programs for Indian artists, scientists, and scholars
- Workshops, symposia, and programs for the benefit of scholars and the public
- Alumni engagement and student support in India
